I once read that dogs don't have emotion, they simply respond to stimuli.

Seven year old Johnathan is visiting.
The first night he was here his five year old cousin stayed with him. Pretty, the Dalmation, (she lets us live with her,) had to be shut out of the room so they could sleep without them being periodically checked on and licked.
Since I was constantly shooing her out, she laid down and waited for an hour. When I went to bed she sneaked out to be with the boys.
The second night Johnathan slept alone and Pretty, after an inital nap in her customary place, went into the bedroom where he was, laid down, and there she stayed until morning.
The next night Jonathan stayed with his cousin. Pretty took her place in his room and waited, even though he was not in the house!
Finally she realized the child wouldn't be there and moved.
The children don't feed and care for her, she just loves them.

Shalom
