The Pilgrims nearly didn't make it.
The first experiment in socialism resulted in the death of many of the colonists.
When the governor announced they no longer needed to pool the fruits of their labor and send it back to England, when they could work for themselves and enjoy the success or failure resulting from their own effort, they worked harder and longer, traded the excess with the natives, sent the furs they recieved in trade back to England and PROSPERED.
True free enterprise was born.
It was successful and still is when an all intrusive government stays out of the way.
